Here’s my list of what I’m exploring this week.

What I’ve been reading-
Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens.
This is one of the best novels I’ve read in a very long time. It’s one of those books that you really hate to see end. Part mystery, part coming of age. And you can read it on many different levels.

I just finished reading The Body Keeps the Score, by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. and just started reading Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma, by Peter Levine. I’m extremely interested in the symptoms commonly seen in both ADHD and those with trauma histories. I think we need to explore this more deeply.

Also, check out Dr. Gabor Mate’s book, When the Body Says No: Understanding the Stress-Disease Connection to learn more about the body/mind connection. So far, this has been the most interesting read (for me) on the topic.

I think we need to pay more attention to all of this.

Product I’m Using-
AT-A-GLANCE 2020 Monthly Planner . I’ve been using these for about 10 years now. What I love are the large boxes; I’m not restricted to 15- minute increments of time; I can jot things down in any order I want. I also LOVE that I can see the entire month at a time.

Favorite Quote-
“Getting accommodations for your ADHD is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.”

Terry Matlen, LMSW (yes, that’s me)

I don’t know how many times women with ADHD have said things like: “I don’t need a babysitter; I’m the mom and should be able to handle the daily chaos.” Or, “I refuse to buy prepared foods for my family; I’m supposed to be able to do this.” Or “I’ll clean the house myself- that’s my responsibility- even though I work 40 hours a week.”

That’s fine but…we have a brain- based condition – an invisible one- that makes MANY daily, ordinary tasks extremely difficult to manage, thanks to our impaired executive functioning. Allow yourself to reach out for help, whether it’s support from friends and family (as long as it’s not toxic), bartering chores, or paying someone to take on some of these tasks.

What I’m Watching-
The Crown on Netflix.
I will bet most of you don’t know this about me, but it is almost impossible for me to sit down and watch TV. I don’t have the patience- I always have to be DOING something (though it’s odd that I could read for hours). The Crown has taken me by surprise. I love it. What’s your favorite show these days? Tell me in the comment section, below.
