20 Quirks Seen in ADHD – Can you Relate?

By Terry Matlen, LMSW

No, you’re not crazy. No, you’re not immature. No, you don’t have a character flaw.

There are many “quirks”, behaviors, traits, habits we see in adults with ADHD. In fact, I have plenty of my own! Rest assured that these are simply ways we cope with our ADHD or how our ADHD brains are “wired.” Read on!

  1. As disorganized as you are, sometimes you cannot get started on a project until your space is cleared and organized. Many are shocked you even have ADHD because your need for neatness helps clear your brain.
  2. You have the need to pick at your skin or pull out your hair/eyebrows/eyelashes. Skin picking can be anywhere on your body- feet, hands, scalp. This can be called body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs).
  3. You HATE when your socks slip off your foot and into your shoe (that just happened to me today- I’m going to toss them in the garbage).
  4. You can eat the same thing for every meal and not care at all. Eating is just to sustain yourself and you hate that it interrupts what you’re doing.
  5. Related to #4: you forget to eat and wonder why you’re dizzy and irritable.
  6. You bought a bottle of Ketchup and are shocked to see 4 sitting in your pantry.
  7. You LOVE animals.
  8. You may at times forget to take care of them.
  9. You get migraines.
  10. You didn’t learn to tie your shoes until you were 8. Or maybe 10.
  11. Related to #10: you didn’t learn to ride a 2-wheeler until you were 12. Or maybe never.
  12. You have so many bruises, people think you’re a professional athlete.
  13. Related to #12: You avoid activities like bowling, tennis, Pickleball, dancing; it’s hard to get your body to do what you want.
  14. You find things hilarious that other people don’t get.
  15. You go ballistic if you accidentally step on chewed chewing gum.
  16. Related to #15:
You hate taking baths or showers (sensory sensitive)
You can hear things no one else even notices.
You meet someone and see them 5 minutes later and have no idea who they are.
    You hoard things.
  17. You start arguing with people and don’t know why or even care at times what you’re arguing about. (It stimulates your hungry brain)
  18. You either desperately want to fit in with others or desperately want to stand out.
  19. You are early to appointments, outings, etc. People say you can’t have ADHD because ADHD folks are always late. But you’re early because you are SO ANXIOUS about being late, you make sure you leave ½ hour too early.
  20. You remember every detail of being seven years old but can’t remember where you just put your ring.

    BONUS – EXTRAS
  21. Jokes go right over your head.
  22. You hate to read.
  23. You are a serial night owl.
  24. You CRAVE chocolate.
  25. You’re a serial coffee drinker.
  26. You don’t transition well from one activity to another.
  27. You barely got through college even with your high IQ.

Please share your own little (or big) quirks in the comment section below and please answer question #1 above.

I Got Me Some Broken Parts, by Colleen Bedore, is a tender, funny picture book about a little girl with a big imagination and an even bigger scar. Told in her own words, this uplifting story celebrates courage, curiosity, and the beautiful messiness of healing.

Loved by ADHD families for its engaging pace, colorful art, and empowering message, it’s a heartfelt reminder that even with broken parts—we’re still whole.

    What I Recommend

    The ADHD Productivity Manual
    By Ari Tuckman, PsyD

This is the closest thing I’ve seen to a comprehensive owner’s manual for your ADHD brain. And like a good owner’s manual, it’s compact, to-the-point, and full of actionable ‘troubleshooting’ prompts/solutions.
